Summary:In December 2019, BBCMA Nigeria did a digital feature on a 9-year-old boy, Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke (aka Kanye), for World Disability Day. Kanye has autism and can find it difficult to communicate verbally, so instead expresses himself through painting. A talented artist, he’s already winning awards, being featured in galleries and getting commissioned to paint for dignitaries around the world. In February 2020, Kanye presented the office with a painting dedicated to BBC Media Action Naija to recognise the team’s efforts to raise awareness and understanding of autism and disability.
Speaking about his talents, his mother Sylvia (on the far right in the photo) said: “Every child has a right to fly. Autism is not a tragedy, ignorance is.”
